DigiEnable Podcast - September 2021

In this episode we talk about location-based apps, the latest from TikTok and Google, and Darren has a wierd focus on Hover Boards and why they should be in existance (best just to listen!)

Show Notes:

1. Google Play Store introduces a nifty change: Local app ratings

Downloading a highly-rated app that features content from all over the world might sound like a safe bet, but it’s pretty useless if parts are blocked in your region. The company is also introducing device type-wise rating next year.

2. .... And local app Yik Yak is back…

Your favorite anonymous local based social media app YikYak is back in app stores in the US, enables users to share their thoughts anonymously, with other users in a 5 mile radius then able to view those comments and notes  (called 'Yaks') and either upvote them or provide their own responses

3. Facebook is bringing calling back to the main app

Some users will be able to make voice and video calls directly from the app soon. While currently, this is just a test, the company said this feature will “reduce the need to jump back and forth between Facebook’s main app and its Messenger service.” Moving towards the all-in-one app of their dreams.

Top tips round up

Social Media: TikTok is Developing its Own AR Effects Creation Platform to Expand its Visual Tools

Just like Facebook's Spark AR platform and Snapchat's Lens Studio, providing more capacity for people to build their own visual effects, utilizing TikTok's various AR functions to create whole new user experiences within the app.

And TikTok's new privacy features make teens think about their decisions… Pop up alerts for enabling DMs and allowing people to download their videos… asking them to confirm that choice and warning them their content could be shared on other platforms.

SEO: Google Updates its 'How Search Works' Website, Providing More Insight into SEO Best Practices

If you need a starting point to learn about the ins and outs of SEO the updated 'How Search Works' website is a solid overview, which could help improve your understanding of each element. Google notes that it made over 4,500 search 'improvements' in 2020 alone, so it’s hard to keep track of all the details!

Productivity: Google is making it easier to save Tab Groups in Chrome

It might soon be possible to save Tab Groups, so you can quickly get back to them after you exit your browsing session. But remember to not have toooo many open and distract you more!
